Brain Injury Awareness Month

March is Brain Injury Awareness month.

It is been over two years since I was rear-ended by a tour bus and sustained complex nervous system trauma, as well as, a moderate traumatic brain injury.  I have been very blessed to be able to, at some level, continue to engage in my art work.  My images have been my expressive force, unconditional partner and have documented a very uncomfortable and life-changing experience due to the accident in December of 2014.  I attend several brain injury support groups (AIM HIGH @ HealthSouth York, INSPIRE at WellSpan York and BELIEVE at the Hanover YMCA). Each has had wonderful activities for this month. WellSpan Rehabilitation hospital in York Pennsylvania featured a Pop-Up Art Show and TBI educational interactive activities on Tuesday, March 21. There was also a display of Masking Brain Injury, a national show, that we made masks for later that evening. I was able to share a few pieces of my art, that have helped me to express and make my way through my recovery process. It was wonderful to have interaction with hospital staff and received feedback from those who were touched by my images and very deep ways.

Communication is not easy for those with traumatic brain injury and stroke.
I am very grateful to have a voice through my art!!

This is my display at the March BIA Pop Up Art Show and Educational display at WellSpan Rehab hospital, York PA. Featuring (clockwise) a self portrait "Do You Hear what I Hear? Do You See what I See?", Mark Making (self directed art activity for cross brain and cognitive motor reintegration) and slide display of "Scrambled Brains" my creative image documentation of my brain injury recovery.

"Neurons that fire together wire together"
May we all be strengthened by positive supportive connections!!

Thank you to all who were able to attend and those who have insight, compassion and are a voice for those recovering from brain injury!!

Lions, Tigers and Roosters, Oh My!!

The Scrambled Brain book is done  and now it's time to step back into the studio !! Before the accident, I was mostly focused on creating realism style of watercolor painting, some imagined and some from real life or with photo references.  After the accident, when I tried to paint in the same way, I became confused - couldn't remember how to mix colors, how to for see composition and proportion, how to establish the best water to pigment ratio for painting. I lost my skills and got intense long lasting headaches when ever I tried to paint. Ugh!! it was frustrating and exhausting. Even before I could have even dreamt, post accident, to do such complex skills, the scrambled brain (process art) was spilling out of me, being my voice when words were hard to find. I used watercolor crayons, which made it much easier for me to put color down. Using a much more primitive approach and much different style. I continue to challenge myself, to re learn basic brain organi...
Welcome to Art by Kym! Since childhood, I loved using drawing to express my wonder and curiosity about the natural world. Though I have always considered myself an artist, creativity has been re emerging into my life more so in the past 10 years. I began stepping back in with watercolors to best express myself and curious to experience what the next image would bring. Very exciting! Following a traumatic brain injury in December, 2014, I have been claiming back many aspects of my life. Trough this experience my creativity has been my voice. Art as process, has helped me to explore concepts of my identity, acceptance and reemergence of my self. My art moves me to a place of spiritual connection and receptivity.  Here I am able to open to a deep inner wisdom and symbolic worlds that inspire healing and transformation in my life and hopefully in the lives of others. My intention is to share insight and images here that will open to self reflection and greater understanding.....

What a Turn Out!!

What an amazing turnout for the Opening Reception of the 2016 Mason Dixon Fall Art Show!! I am grateful for those who were able to come to the event and look forward to those of you who will be stopping by the exhibit this month.  It was my first show in 3 years and quite an accomplishment being shy of 2 years post accident.  I forgot how much preparation and energy goes into pulling it all together.  Especially when my brain feels like thick mud moving through cement! Lol!! It was a pleasure exhibiting with Barbara Bishop and John de Beaumont.   The Art Director, Polly Elliott, did an exceptional job organizing and hanging the exhibit.  The Mason Dixon Public Library and supporters out did themselves with a lovely display of delicious food and drink.  It is a beautiful venue!  If you have not yet had the opportunity to experience the exhibit, please take the opportunity to do so, it will run thru December 9th. The library hours are: Monday...
